"I try to use the space as multipurpose," she said, adding that she noticed and pursued the storefront after driving through the neighborhood.

With reduced foot traffic in winter, Ortega said business has been tougher during the cold months, but she looks forward to spring and neighborhood events like What's Blooming on Harrison in May.

Laura Maychruk, owner of The Buzz Cafe and president of the Oak Park Arts District board, said it may take some time for Ortega to establish her presence in a new area.

"It's very unique, and she's smart in that way, that she's diversifying her business," Maychruk said of the dual use for the space.
