Food costs, rent outpacing wages: report

Increased wages and support of local food programs are needed to ensure access to healthy food, a new report by Hastings Prince Edward Public Health shows.

 

“Our costs of living are going up but our incomes aren’t matching,” registered dietitian Jessica Richardson told members of the Hastings and Prince Edward Counties Board of Health during a meeting Wednesday at the health unit office in Belleville.

She revealed an annual report by staff. ‘The Real Cost of Eating Well in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties’ monitors the affordability and accessibility of food and is used to guide health unit programs and policies.

It focuses on food insecurity, which occurs when people don’t have enough regular access to food because of a lack of money.

“Poverty is the root cause of food insecurity,” the report notes in uppercase type.

One in eight Ontario households doesn’t have enough money to buy food, it reads.
