Rush hospital temporarily closes mental health units amid safety concerns

The units are undergoing renovations to correct the situation. Rush was already planning renovations in response to similar concerns raised earlier by the Joint Commission, which accredits hospitals, according to a recent Rush financial filing.

“We were in the process of addressing those issues but decided to close the units to allow construction workers the full access needed to complete renovations more quickly and with less patient disruption,” Jolie said in an email.

Construction is expected to wrap up in late June, and Rush plans to reopen the units upon approval from the state Department of Public Health.

The state health department visited again after the units’ closure, and found that “the immediate jeopardy to patient health and safety” was gone, but Rush was still out of compliance, according to an April letter from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to the head of Rush University Medical Center. Rush has until June 30 to come into compliance or could risk no longer being able to participate in Medicare.
