Yates CCE honors media at dinner

At their annual dinner and meeting Thursday, Dec. 6, the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Yates County recognized The Chronicle-Express with their Friend of Extension award for 2018. Other local media, radio station WFLR and The Observer newspaper were also recognized for supporting CCE in their educational programs.

Accepting the award were the Chronicle’s Publisher Karen Morris and Staff Writer John Christensen, who reciprocated thanks for the roles Cooperative Extension and 4-H have played in the survival of agriculture in Yates County.

Hosted by the Penn Yan Elks Lodge, the dinner featured all locally-sourced menu items: roasted pork, sweet potatoes, squash, braised red cabbage, Waldorf salad, a selection of Spotted Duck frozen custard, as well as wine and beer tastings from Climbing Bines Craft Ale Co., Keuka Spring Vineyards, and McGregor Vineyard.

The guest speaker was Extension Vegetable Specialist Christy Hoepting, who spoke with great enthusiasm on the Potter Muck land and its products, especially onions. She detailed the efforts by CCE to reduce the application of pesticides to control the onion thrip, which can decimate harvests, and has successfully reduced the the thrips’ evolution of resistance to new herbicides.
