Non-cow’s milk beverages like soy, almond, and even omega-3-rich hemp milk, are big business, since many consumers see them as healthier alternatives to cow’s milk. These products also ease parents’ minds when their children with milk allergies or lactose intolerance crave something to pour on their morning cereal.

But as more families make the switch, say the authors of a new study, children may be unintentionally running the risk of low vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is a nutrient added to cow’s milk that is essential for maintaining strong bones. 

“Children drinking only non-cow's milk were more than twice as likely to be vitamin D deficient as children drinking only cow's milk,” said study author Dr. Jonathon Maguire, a pediatrician and researcher with St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, Canada, in a press release. “Among children who drank non-cow's milk, every additional cup of non-cow's milk was associated with a 5 percent drop in vitamin D levels per month.”

I'm 18 years old and for the last three months I've been a vegetarian. I don't eat any meat or poultry. And I don't eat eggs or milk. I do eat fish though, usually tuna, once a week. What is a good multivitamin and/or other vitamin supplimets to make

Fish is not a fruit. It is a meat. FIsh is meat. You eat fish.

You don't miss stuff from meat and dairy. Just eat good food- lentils and nuts for protein and calcium and iron. That's all you need.

Is there a multivitamin suitable for vegetarians that I'm likely to find at the supermarket?

I looked at a bunch, but they all seem to have gelatin in them. Admittedly I didn't stand there and read every single one of the hundreds of bottles since I didn't have time.


Try VegLife- Vegan One Multiple vitamins and minerals. It is 100% vegan. However, I haven't been able to find it in any supermarkets. Vitamin Shoppe carries it, if you aren't near one locally, you can order it online @ www.nutraceutical.com.


Best bet would be to ask at the health food shops.


I haven't found a suitable veg multi in the supermarket (I've been looking for a loooooong time!) I used to use Schiff's veg multi, which you can find in some chain drug stores, but I recently found out that their vitamin D is animal-sourced (I *think*
