Ask the Doctors: 'Eye vitamins' ok, but better to get vitamins with food

Dear Reader: Skepticism should be a marker for overall health, especially with the flood of vitamins sold in vitamin shops, grocery stores and pharmacies. Vitamin supplements have been touted for nearly every condition with scant evidence of their efficacy when compared with a healthy diet.

Lutein and zeaxanthin generally top the list of “eye vitamins.” That’s because these dietary carotenoids –– related to beta carotene and vitamin A –– help form retinal macular pigment. This pigment absorbs damaging light rays and thus protects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for detailed vision. Additionally, these carotenoids are antioxidants, protecting the eye from cellular damage.

Now let’s examine the evidence. Diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin have been associated with a lower risk of the late changes of macular degeneration. And, in a review of eight studies, higher blood levels of lutein and zeaxanthin were linked to a decreased cataract risk. Leafy green vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, kale and parsley are high in these carotenoids, as are eggs, so a diet containing these foods may help protect your vision.

Is the daily Centrum multivitamin OK as a prenatal vitamin?

Pre-Natal Vitamins vs. Centrum Multivitamin/Multimineral Supplement. The amounts of vitamins and minerals seem to be the same. The only difference I can see is the amount of folic acid is only 400mg. Would taking two of the Centrums a day accomplish

Nope, don't take two because of too much of the wrong kind of Vit. A. You can continue taking your Centrum (one tablet) until you see your doctor. However, Target sells prenatal vitamins for about $10 and they are perfectly fine.

Folic Acid is one of the most important vitamins that you need more of during pregnancy and breastfeeding. You will need to either take a prenatal or take the vitamin plus a folic acid pill as well. Prenatals have more of the needed vitamins than regular

You don't need to buy any name brand multi vit's just one that has all of what you need. If it does not carry the correct amount of folic acid take a separate folic acid tablet.

Does Centrum multivitamin slow down the aging process?

I know that this question does not belong to this section, but I don't get any good answers at the section where it belongs.

So, I'm taking Centrum multivitamin once in everyday, and I heard that it slows down the aging process, is this

A multitvitamin is okay with a balanced diet.

The Silver is for Seniors. We seniors don't get the aging process slowed by taking vitamins either. We are slow moving not slow aging.

and Trix are for kids.

It is very unlikely that it slows down the aging process. In fact, I think that the whole thing might well be hokum, but I have not looked into it properly, so I can't give you a definite answer.
