Father and son jailed after being caught selling illegal teeth products face further action

Trading standards officers working for Powys County Council uncovered the fraud alongside the General Dentist Council in a three-year investigation that led to John Barry Hargreaves and son Matthew Hargreaves from Knutsford, Cheshire, each being jailed for 18 months.

They were convicted of running a fraudulent business between October 2012 and July 2015, making false claims about the teeth whitening products.

The products that were on sale at the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells in July 2013 did not comply with safety laws and were unsafe due to harmful levels of hydrogen peroxide, with one victim receiving hospital treatment for burns .

John Hargreaves' wife, Jean, was jailed for six months, suspended for two years, after being convicted of making false claims about the products.

Following the court case at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on Friday, the council revealed that a proceeds of crime timetable is set to disclose the criminal benefit of the defendants from their activities.
