Libba Bray's 'Beauty Queens' is a smart, entertaining 'Lord of the Flies' for girls

By Chelsey Philpot

Printz Award winner Libba Bray's new novel is an adventure story for any teen girl who loved "Peter Pan" but wanted to be a Lost Boy more than Tinker Bell.

"Beauty Queens" is madly funny, satirical and delightfully warped -- an approach that readers of Bray's breakout 2009 book, "Going Bovine," will recognize.

This time, the Texas-raised writer takes her cue from William Golding's "Lord of the Flies." Instead of stranding British schoolboys on an island, Bray crashes 50 teen beauty contestants on a tropical oasis.

The girls are without adults, working cellphones, or, gasp, hair dryers. What follows is so outrageous and smart that it's hard not to imagine the dour Golding grinning in the afterlife at the many allusions to his 1954 classic.

Tough Taylor Rene Krystal Hawkins, aka Miss Texas, and cynical Miss New Hampshire become leaders of the ditzy bunch. The girls soon move beyond practicing their interviews and dance routines to building huts, catching fish with flattening irons and creative uses of hair-remover cream. While they learn to fend for themselves, an evil conglomerate, the Corporation, plots with MoMo. B. ChaCha, an Elvis-obsessed dictator of a rich small country. They envision a pageant that would be the girls' last.
