Business Watch: Hair salons merge

Craig McKinney said Snippery owner D.J. Day wanted to hire more people, but they weren’t able to attract new stylists to an area that didn’t see particularly strong traffic. Rather than risk slowly losing business, they decided to close and merge, he said. The four stylists will start working Oct. 1 at Hair Care Etc.

“Nothing is changing except our location,” he said.

Theresa Hannebaum, who co-owns Hair Care Etc., 1801 S.E. 29th, with her husband Keenan, said she bought the business in July. She had started running her nail business, Sparkle and Shine, out of the building in May.

Hannebaum said she is rearranging the interior to better use space, increasing from six hair-styling stations to 11. She recently hired one person in addition to the four from Snippery, and plans to hire two more people. She said she is excited to combine multiple businesses.

“You take their reputation and my reputation,” she said.

Hair Care Etc. will have longer hours than before, Hannebaum said, with appointments likely beginning before 9 a.m. and lasting until 7 or 8 p.m. The individual stylists set their own hours, she said, so people who want to be sure their favorite stylist will do their hair should call the salon, (785) 267-0477, for an appointment.
